Nobody is quite sure where fairies came from. Some believe that after being conquered by the Celts, the Tuatha de Danaan (TOO-a-ha day DAW-nen), who were small-statured, fled into the forest and hills of Ireland. Where they, very well, may dwell even today. As the centuries have passed, this race of ancient people have become smaller and more difficult for modern humans to detect.

Many people are convinced that fairies are as old as time, and definitely much older than humans. The English word "fairy" comes from the old French world faery, which comes from the Latin word fata, or fate. I use the word "fairy" as a name for any tiny, magical being who is from time to time naughty but for the most part nice, and who above all loves their freedom. Fairies possess magic that is helpful in some cases and mischievous in others. Some fairies have wings while others do not. Fairies are also called many other names, including: Little People, Small Ones, Wee Folk, Fay, and the Folk.

Fairy Rings

A Fairy Ring is a place where fairies will meet to dance. All fairies absolutely love dancing, and they especially enjoy dancing in leaps and bounds around the circle. Folk tradition says the rings themselves are created from the marks that fairies make on the grass during their lively circular dances.

Fairy Rings are found in woods and fields and appear as rings of dark grass or circles of mushrooms. Sometimes they are a combination of the two. The grass within the ring is usually a bright, lush shade of green.

Legends of the Fairy Ring:

Some folk tales describe night-time fairies who ride young horses in circles around the fairy rings.

Other legends say that the rings may have a connection with Fairyland. A person who steps in a ring will suddenly be able to see the fairies dancing and hear their sweet music. They become so entranced, that those who experience it lose all sense of time and will stay dancing with the fairies until they are pulled away.

Some places tell stories of good luck if one steps into a fairy ring, and others say it will bring misfortune.

The British Isles are scattered with ancient stone circles that resemble fairy rings. Perhaps fairies were once much larger than they are now.

Making Contact with Fairies

If you ever the opportunity to make contact with a fairy, always approach these beings with a kind and loving heart. Ask yourself the question, what is it that makes me want to approach fairies? If you are genuine and loving in your heart you may very well be successful. Fairies are highly sensitive to feelings and will hide themselves from those whose intentions are suspicious.

There are many differences between humans and fairies. We are large and noisy, fairies are slight and quiet — they are sometimes surprised and scared by us. Fairies are great lovers of nature, honoring and protecting it. We, unfortunately, often destroy nature by building houses and roads, which often encroach on their territory. People have been known to capture fairies in their quest to "acquire" things. For these reasons, Fairies have great cause to fear and distrust us. If you see one, make sure you proceed with caution so as to earn the respect and trust of these little people. To show them how much you care about them, you may want to treat your environment with respect.

Find a place that you think fairies may be present. Get comfortable and sit calmly and quietly. Fairies are more likely to approach a human who is seated and still rather than standing and moving around. While sitting there close your eyes and imagine yourself talking to a fairy.

If a fairy reveals itself to you, remember these little beings respond favorably to offers of friendship and mentions of beauty and joy to the world. Make sure you speak quietly and use your sweetest, gentlest voice. Some fairies are more shy than others, and appreciate it when you speak with your eyes shut, it gives them more confidence around you.

Children have a much easier time contacting fairies than adults do because of their innocence and pureness in heart. This shines through, and fairies are highly attracted to these qualities. Also, children are physically smaller than adults and less frightening to fairies. The natural curiosity in children is so genuine that it awakens the curiosity in fairies.
